Working with you to help your child achieve their full potential

A student in the library

At Central Sussex College we recognise the pivotal role parents and carers play in guiding and supporting their child in making important decisions about their education and future career. Which is why our Student Support team are always on hand to support you and your child make their future choices and are available to talk about progression.

Support for your child every step of the way

Each student is assigned a Personal Tutor who will monitor their progress during their time at college. Students can request a meeting with their Personal Tutor at any point during the academic year. Where concerns are raised about the student’s progress, a member of the Personal Tutor Team will work with the student and yourselves to identify an appropriate course of action. For those students showing a particular aptitude, encouragement is given to enhance their chance of success through the college’s Very able and Talented programme.

During the autumn and spring terms, students also meet individually with their Subject Tutors to review progress, attendance, punctuality, attitude to learning and the meeting of deadlines. They will also be rated according to their overall advancement towards their target grade. Students will be given clear advice on what they need to do to fulfil their potential, with any support that's required identified including help to plan what they need to do to succeed. A formal review document is completed and a copy sent to parents and carers.

The Parents’/Carers’ Evening is the perfect opportunity to meet your child’s Subject and Personal Tutors to discuss their progress further. We encourage you to attend so you can ensure your child continues to be motivated to succeed. It’s also a useful early warning check to identify and address any signs of problems or difficulties that your child may be experiencing.

We strongly believe that all students have the right to equal access to education. Those with a recorded learning difficulty or disability will be offered on-going help from a member of the Additional Support Team.

As well as academic study, we actively encourage all of our students to take part in enrichment activities that will help them develop their social and personal skills.

A helping hand for that next career step

The on-site Careers Suite, staffed by dedicated Careers Advisers, provides advice and guidance whether students choose employment, a gap year or university. Students are encouraged to drop in to the Careers Suite at any time, or they can access up-to-the-minute careers information through the Student Intranet, Moodle or any workstation in the College.

Individual interviews with a Careers Adviser and support from the Personal Tutor all help students to move on to higher education or employment at the end of their course.

Parents and Carers are also encouraged to attend the annual Higher Education Evening in February to find out more about the opportunities available to your child, how to apply and what financial help is available. Find out what was covered in this year’s Higher Education Evening in the rleated links section opposite.

Tour the facilities, meet the staff and students

The best way to find out what Central Sussex College’s Sixth Form Haywards Heath campus has to offer your child is to come to one of our Open Events. If you’re unable to attend a pre-arranged event, call us on 01444 456281 to arrange a personal guided tour. This will give you an opportunity to look around our fantastic new facilities, find out more about the wide range of courses on offer, meet our dedicated and passionate teachers, chat to some of our current students and get more information about the range of support available – from additional learning support to financial help. Check out the video for a sneak preview of what our students think about the newly redeveloped campus.
