Physics AS/A Level
Course Code:PHY-AS
Course Type:Normally part of a full-time programme of study delivered throughout the week.
Qualification: GCE in Physics AS & A2 (Edexcel)
Duration: One year for AS Level. Two years for A Level Physics.
Venue:
Haywards Heath Campus,
Harlands Road, Haywards Heath, West Sussex, RH16 1LT
Start Date: September
Suitable For:
Anyone who is curious about the world around them and wants to know why things are the way they are. Why are skies blue and sunsets red? What causes tides? Why are there dimples in a golfball? Does the water really go down the plughole the other way in Australia? Alternatively, you may simply need a physics qualification to complement your other science subjects.
Students with some mathematical, computing and organisational skills will gain most from the course.
Entry By: Interview
Entry Requirements:
You need Maths and Science core and additional (or Physics) GCSE at grade B or above.
Students MUST study AS Mathematics along with AS Physics.
NOTE - Additional Applied Science is not suitable for entry onto this course
Course Content:
Physics is a key science that deals with how things behave and why they behave the way they do. It includes such topics as heat, light, energy, quantum phenomena, waves, oscillations, fields, materials, magnetism, electricity, electronics, radioactivity, sound, mechanics, stars. It is concerned with objects that range in size from fundamental particles to the whole Universe!
One noteworthy feature of this specification is that it aims to relate physics to real-life situations such as archaeology, medicine, etc. Physics lessons involve a variety of “activities” – experiments, poster-making, internet searches, discussions, presentations, etc – designed to lead you to a fuller understanding of the theory. Practice questions are also an important part of the learning process.
80% of the AS - Level (and the full A Level) is assessed by examinations and 20% by coursework. The AS and A2 pieces of coursework are both experimental reports.
You sit an exam paper in January of the AS year and one (or two) papers during the summer term - depending on whether you need to re-sit the January exam.
The same applies in the second year.
Outcome of Course and Progression:
GCE AS Level Physics on successful completion of the first year.
GCE A Level Physics on successful completion of the second year.
A Level Physics is a route into numerous careers: engineering, medical physics, meteorology, computing, materials science, civil service, communications, environmental work, education, geophysics, economic modelling in the City, etc.
The skills you learn in a physics-based degree are in short supply in the UK and are highly prized in our technological and computer-based economy.
Cost:
AS text book approx. £20 and A2 text book approx. £20.
