Dance AS/A Level

Course Type:Normally part of a full-time programme of study delivered throughout the week.

Qualification: AS / A Level

Duration: One year for AS Level
Two years for A Level

Suitable For: • If you have always been physical and Dance is a way of focusing your energies into a formal qualification.
• Using as a springboard into Higher Education.
• You would like a subject that is taught through physicality to balance your other subject choices.
• You have done dance since you were a child and want to have a deeper understanding and explore the breadth of dance

Entry By: Interview and Audition

Entry Requirements:

5 A-C grades at GCSE, which must include English.
In order to study this course you will need to pass an audition as well as achieve the GCSE grades required.

It is designed for students with some dance experience who wish to study the theory and practice of dance in some depth.
You must be willing to work with enthusiasm and commitment.

Course Content:

You will cover the following:-
• The dancer as performer, knowledge and understanding of the demands made in practice and performance on the dancer
• The process and craft of choreography
• The process of solo choreography from investigation and research of ideas through to outcome
• Physical and interpretative skills in relation to performance of solo choreography
• Performance skills within a duo/trio performance context

You will:
• Investigate one area of study from modern dance
• Critical analysis of one piece of set dance
• Choreograph a group piece from investigation and research of ideas through to outcome
• Perform a solo. Demonstrating skills in relation to a specific practitioner
• Be able to comment on the structural and expressive aspects of dances showing understanding of their context and their realization in performance
• Consider in detail the demands made on the dancers body including issues related to physical skills, safe practice and health
• Be expected to attend various events in order to develop a broader awareness of dance in the UK.


Assessment throughout the course takes place through practical and written assignments, live performances and written exams.

The AS course is 60% practical exam and 40% written exam.
The A2 course is 50% practical exam and 50% written exam.

Outcome of Course and Progression:

The course can be a way of fulfilling entry requirements into Higher Education to study either Dance or any other subject.

Cost:

As part of the course there are theatre trips and workshops that you are expected to attend. These cost between £5 and £35 and take place twice a term.
