Law AS/A Level

Course Code:LAW-AS

Course Type:Normally part of a full-time programme of study delivered throughout the week.

Qualification: GCE AS/A2 in Law

Duration: AS = 1 year
A2 = 2 years

Venue: Haywards Heath Campus, Harlands Road, Haywards Heath, West Sussex, RH16 1LT

Start Date: September

Suitable For: Students wishing to go on to a degree course, whether in Law or any other subject.
Alternatively, any student wishing to study at this level with an interest in the subject or who wishes to pursue a challenging and rewarding qualification.
No prior knowledge of Law is required.

Entry By: Interview

Entry Requirements:

General college entry requirements with at least a grade C in English.

Course Content:

AS Law consists of 2 modules:

Module 1 : English Legal System.
The civil courts and other methods of dispute resolution. Criminal process and the criminal courts. The penal system. Details of legal personnel. Lay people in the legal system. Provision of legal services.

Module 2 : Sources of Law
The doctrine of precedent. Legislation. European law. Law reform.


A2 law also consists of 2 modules:

Criminal Law 1:
Principles of criminal liability. Preliminary crimes. Fatal offences against the person. General defences. Non fatal offences against the person. Offences against property.

Criminal Law 2:
A detailed examination of one of the topics studied in Criminal Law

During the year students will be assessed regularly through tasks set by the teacher.
This will include written essays and research tasks.



All modules are assessed by external exam in June. One module at AS and A2 will be examined in January.

Outcome of Course and Progression:

AS/A2 in Law.
