Suitable For: People who can show evidence of a genuine interest in the care and education of young children, and who wish to gain a professional qualification to work with children from 0-16 years

Entry Requirements:

You must be at least 16 years of age, and be able to demonstrate the ability to study at a high level as the full Diploma is equivalent to 3 A levels and carries UCAS points. You need to obtain a minimum of 4 GCSE Grade C or above, one of which must be English. Learners who have an equivalent academic or vocational qualification at Level 2 may be considered. Entrants from the Level 2 Diploma in Child Care and Education need a grade B and Level 1 Functional Skills in English and Maths.
You should be able to demonstrate ability to study in depth and produce a high standard of work. You also need to successfully complete the application and interview process. Some learners will also be required to complete Functional Skills. Additional support will be made available for learners with particular needs.
Learners will need to have a clear Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau check. This will be processed by the college.

Course Content:

During two years of full time study 60% of the time will be in college and 40% of the time in placements.
The course consists of the following modules:-

Unit 1 Introduction to working with children.
Unit 2 Development from conception to 16 years
Unit 3 Supporting Children
Unit 4 Keeping children safe
Unit 5 The principles underpinning the role of practitioner working with children
Unit 6 Promoting a healthy environment for children
Unit 7 Play and learning in children’s education
Unit 8 Caring for children
Unit 9 Development of professional skills within children’s education.
Unit 12 Nutrition and healthy food for children
Unit 14 Working with children with special needs
Unit 18 Working with babies from birth to 12 months

The course is assessed over 2 years

Internal assessments
Assignment based Units 1 – 5 and 12, 14, 18
Portfolio of evidence for Units 6,7 and 8
Diary tasks (evidence of placement) – Unit 9

External assessment
1 short answer test paper based on a seen case study (based on Units 3-5)
1 small scale research task.

You will also be assessed as competent to work with young children by successfully completing the required number of days in practical placements and passing your professional development profiles and practice evidence records. (Unit 9)

Candidates must undertake the teaching of all units to enable them to pass the full diploma.

Outcome of Course and Progression:

The course will enable you to work at home and abroad with children:-

• As a nanny in the home environment
• In a day nursery or nursery school/class
• With children with additional needs
• As a teaching assistant in a primary school
• As a children’s holiday representative

High grades will enable you to apply to University to pursue a route into early years education/teaching, children’s nursing, midwifery, child development and other choices.

Cost:

16-18 year olds will not have to pay tuition fees, awarding body registration or exam fees. However they are required to pay for other third party costs, such as books and equipment.
Students aged over 19 on the 31st August in the year in which they start their studies, have to pay tuition fees. In addition they are expected to pay awarding body registration, exam fees and other third party costs, such as books and equipment.
Some students may be eligible for a fee concession, although in most cases some element of the fees will have to be paid.

Course Times/Timetable:

This is a 2 year fulltime course. Learners should expect to be in college between 9 am and 5.30 pm on college days. Placement times can vary according to the setting. Learners are required to complete 6 hours a day in placement and a minimum of 125 days over the 2 years. Holidays cannot be sanctioned during the college term. 100% attendance at college and placement is expected.
