Suitable For: People who can show evidence of a genuine interest in caring for people, and who wish to gain a qualification, or to work in care.

Entry Requirements:

You must be at least 16 years of age, and be able to demonstrate the ability to study at a high level as the full Diploma is equivalent to 3 A levels and carries UCAS points. You need to obtain a minimum of 4 GCSEs at Grade C or above, one of which must be English. Learners who have an equivalent academic or vocational qualification at Level 2 may be considered. Entrants from the Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care need a merit grade and Level 1 Functional Skills in English and Maths.
You should be able to demonstrate ability to study in depth and produce a high standard of work. You also need to successfully complete the application and interview process. Some learners may also be required to complete Functional Skills. Additional learning support will be made available for learners with particular needs.
Learners will need to have good references and a satisfactory Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau check. This will be processed by the college.

Course Content:

During two years of full time study you will attend College for three or four days per week and work placement for one day per week. There will be four rotations of work placement including working with children, adults, people with additional needs and a career choice placement.
The course consists of the following modules in year 1:-

Unit 2 Equality and Diversity
Unit 3 Health and Safety
Unit 4 Human growth and development
Unit 5 Anatomy
Unit 6 Personal and professional development
Unit 7 Sociology
Unit 8 Psychology
Unit 10 Caring for children and young people
Unit 11 Safeguarding adults and promoting independence
Unit 44 Vocational experience

The course is assessed over 2 years by coursework which is internally marked and externally moderated.

Candidates must undertake the teaching of all units to enable them to pass the full diploma.

Other Details:

A clear Enhanced Criminal Record Bureau (CRB) check will be required.

Outcome of Course and Progression:

The course will enhance your opportunities of gaining work in a variety of care settings such as nursing homes, residential care homes, advice shops, family centres, support worker, personal assistant, rehabilitation centres etc:-

High grades will enable you to apply to University to study areas such as health and social care, social policy, psychology, social work, nursing, teaching, occupational therapy, speech therapy, paramedic studies and other subjects allied to medicine.

Cost:

16-18 year olds will not have to pay tuition fees, awarding body registration or exam fees. However they are required to pay for other third party costs, such as books, equipment and educational trips/visits.
Students aged over 19 on the 31st August in the year in which they start their studies, have to pay tuition fees. In addition they are expected to pay awarding body registration, exam fees and other third party costs, such as books, equipment and educational trips/visits.
Some students may be eligible for a fee concession, although in most cases some element of the fees will have to be paid.
Please note: Other costs (CRB, books, uniforms, trips, materials etc) will be £100.00.

Course Times/Timetable:

This is a 2 year fulltime course. Learners should expect to be in college between 9 am and 5.30 pm on college days. Placement times can vary according to the setting. Learners are required to complete 6 hours a day in placement. Holidays cannot be sanctioned during the college term. 100% attendance at college and placement is expected.
