Suitable For: This course is suitable for those who have an interest in the sport and leisure
industry, for those who are returning to education or for those who found the
school environment a challenge, but want to further their general education.
The course develops life skills such as communication, number and IT, and it
helps to improve confidence. The subject areas do have a sport and leisure
focus but with the aim of preparing you for the workplace or to study at the
next level, which is the BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Sport.

Entry By: Interview

Entry Requirements:

No formal qualifications are required, but you are expected to be at entry level standard of literacy and numeracy, supported by a general education or work experience as well as a genuine interest in sport and leisure.

Course Content:

The course is made up of ten units which add up to 37 credits.
Units studied are:
• Investigating Rights and Responsibilities at Work
• Risks and Hazards in Sport and Active Leisure
• Taking Part in Exercise and Fitness
• How the Body Works
• Planning Own Fitness Programme
• Assisting a Leader of Sports or Active Leisure Activities to Plan and Deliver an Activity
• Working in Sport and Active Leisure
• Sport and Active Leisure Group Project
• Job Opportunities in Sport and Active Leisure
• Physical Activities for Children
Also there will be an opportunity to achieve a First Aid certificate.


Most practical lessons will be based at K2 Leisure Centre. Students will be expected to make their own way to and from this facility, and in time for their lessons.

ASSESSMENT
The course is continually assessed with internally set assignments which are graded either a pass or fail (refer)
An overall Pass grade is awarded for the qualification at the end as long as all criteria have been achieved.
There will be a number of trips organised throughout the programme and it is expected that you will meet these costs, payable at enrolment. This is known as a Travel Fund. The cost of this fund will be confirmed during the interview process.

Outcome of Course and Progression:

The BTEC Level 1 Diploma in Sport and Active Leisure is designed to prepare you for employment in organisations such as Sport Centres and Leisure Centres or to provide a good grounding to go onto study more advanced courses such as a BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Sport. There is an emphasis on improving literacy skills
and self confidence. Students will join with other BTEC Sports students for some sports activities including opportunities for team sports and trips.

Cost:

16-18 year olds will not have to pay tuition fees, awarding body registration or exam fees. However they are required to pay for other third party costs, such as books, equipment and educational trips/visits.
Students aged over 19 on the 31st August in the year in which they start their studies, have to pay tuition fees. In addition they are expected to pay awarding body registration and exam fees, other third party costs, such as books, equipment and educational trips/visits.
Some students may be eligible for a fee concession, although in most cases some element of the fees will have to be paid.
