Suitable For: This course is suitable for those wishing to begin studying carpentry and joinery. The course is designed to give underpinning knowledge and skills to those who wish to follow a career path within the industry. The knowledge and skills will provide a solid foundation to study at level 2, accepted as industry standard.

Entry Requirements:

You must be at least 16 years of age and should have completed secondary education with fair GCSE results (at least two at grade D or above, preferably in Maths and English). You must demonstrate an interest in carpentry and joinery.

Course Content:

The course is designed to help learners new to the trade to develop a solid understanding of the requirements of carpentry and joinery. The course consists of approximately 60% practical and 40% theory-based activities. You will produce a portfolio and can expect to cover Carpentry and Joinery with general construction knowledge. You will also be expected to undertake Functional Skills at an appropriate level and a Personal and Social Development Award.


The course is made up of a number of units including:
• Safe working practices in construction
• Information, quantities and communicating with others
• Building methods and construction technology
• Produce basic woodworking joints
• Maintain and use carpentry and joinery hand tools
• Prepare and use carpentry and joinery

Assessment is based on the learner showing what they can do as an individual and their understanding of the subject, undertaking both theory and practical assignments covering the general principles of carpentry and joinery.

Other Details:

All practical materials and tools are supplied for this course. It should be noted that applicants must supply their own personal protective equipment at their own cost, usually boots and overalls. Some contributions may be required for trips and visits. There may also be costs for the purchase of specific course books that will be discussed at interview.

Outcome of Course and Progression:

This course provides an excellent opportunity to begin studying in carpentry and joinery. It allows learners to progress onto a level 2 Diploma or an apprenticeship if suitable employment can be found the criteria for an apprenticeship met.

Cost:

16-18 year olds will not have to pay tuition fees, awarding body registration or exam fees. However they are required to pay for other third party costs, such as books, equipment and educational trips/visits.
Students aged over 19 on the 31st August in the year in which they start their studies, have to pay tuition fees. In addition they are expected to pay awarding body registration and exam fees, other third party costs, such as books, equipment and educational trips/visits.
Some students may be eligible for a fee concession, although in most cases some element of the fees will have to be paid.
Please note: Other costs (books, uniforms, trips, materials etc) will be £25.00
