Course Content:
The Higher Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment is made up the following components:
1. Principal Learning (occupying half of your course time). You’ll explore Construction, and see the role that it plays in organisations, for individuals and in society as a whole. This is a freestanding qualification which is sector related, focusing on developing knowledge, understanding and skills that are relevant to the chosen sector and applying these to work-based situations. Further details on Principal Learning may be found in “Other Details” over the page.
This will be presented wholly by the college or in collaboration with schools.
2. Additional and specialist learning (occupying almost 1/3 of your course time) consists of accredited qualifications at the same level as, or one level above, the Diploma which have been approved under Section 96 of the Learning and Skills Act 2000. It may include qualifications which are also available to Learners not taking the Diploma, or qualifications specifically developed to be part of the Diploma.
Additional Learning is intended to broaden the learning experience by including qualifications from other sectors.
Specialist Learning is intended to allow Learners to specialise further in the sector by undertaking qualifications from the same sector as the Diploma.
NB. Additional and Specialist Learning are available at college but may be offered at your school.
3. Work Experience: The Diploma has a requirement for a minimum of 10 days work experience, related to Work-based activities, to support the programme of study. Work experience will support the development and recognition of work based-related learning, build on previous work experience (if any), develop sector skills when set in relevant settings, develop general employability skills, enhance the overall learning experience and allow flexibility around how evidence of attainment is achieved. It also allows learners to draw together, apply and add to their knowledge and enable them to develop confidence and expertise.
4. Student Project The project is offered as a stand along qualification. As part of the Higher Diploma learners will complete the project qualification. Its aim is to enable learners to develop as inquisitive and independent learners, be inspired and enthused by new areas or methods of study, extend their planning, research, analysis and presentation skills and apply their Personal, Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS) and use their learning experiences to support their personal aspirations for further and higher education and career development.

5. Functional Skills You will study English, Maths and ICT as part of your Diploma course. You will need to pass these at level 3 functional skill to obtain your Diploma qualification, and for whatever you go on to do next.
6. Personal, Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS): These are skills like team-working, creative thinking and self-management, and are integrated into the course units of study.
NB. If studying the Diplomas as part of your studies at school the Functional Skills and PLTS are embedded in the programmes delivered at school as part of the Key Stage 4 Curriculum.

On successful completion of this course, students will be accredited with an award which is equivalent to 7 GCSE’s ( at grades A to C ) .
