Qualification: • Year 1 - BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Public Service (9 units in year
one)
• Year 2 - BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Public Service (18 units over two
years)

You will also have the opportunity to study Maths and English at Level 2
(Functional Skills or GCSE) if you have not already achieved a grade C.

You are required to pass all nine units of year one to continue on the two year programme.

Suitable For: This course is designed for candidates who are seeking a career in the Armed Forces, the Police Service, the Fire Service, H.M. Revenue and Customs and other related rescue or security services. Although the course does not guarantee entry to any of the organisations, it seeks to develop skills and knowledge that would be sought in applicants. The course also develops skills that would be transferable into other non-uniformed Public Services

Entry By: Interview

Entry Requirements:

Achievement of 5 GCSEs, or equivalent, at Grade C or above including GCSE English.
If candidates achieved Grade D in English , then it is a requirement to study and re-sit the GCSE in the first year as well as Functional Skills Maths.
Those with a BTEC L2 qualification, at minimum grade Merit, but without GCSE English at Grade C or above it is a requirement to study L2 Functional Skills English in year one.

Course Content:

The course is made up of 18 units which add up to 180 credits.
Units studied are:
• Government, policies and the Public Services
• Leadership and teamwork in the Public Services
• Citizenship, diversity and the Public Services
• Understanding discipline in the Uniformed Public Services
• Fitness testing and training for the Uniformed Public Services
• Physical preparation, health and lifestyle for the Public Services
• Skills for land-based outdoor and adventurous activities
• Crime and its effect on society
• Command and control in the uniformed Public Services
• Responding to emergency service incidents
• Planning and management of major incidents
• Police powers in the Public Services
• Aspects of the legal system and law making process
• Security procedures in the Public Services
• Practical team sports
• Instructing physical activity and exercise
• Current issues in Uniformed Public Services
• Understanding the Impact of war, conflict and terrorism on Public Services

In addition to the BTEC course you will also be able to achieve a First Aid certificate.

Most units will involve theoretical and practical work. At times you will be expected to work away from direct supervision, and thus, are expected to show maturity and commitment to the requirements of the course.

Most practical lessons will be based at K2 Leisure Centre. Students will be expected to make their own way to and from this facility, and in time for their lessons.

Other Details:

There will be a number of trips organised throughout the programme and it is expected that you will meet these costs, payable at enrolment. This is known as a Travel Fund. The cost of this fund will be confirmed during the interview process.

Outcome of Course and Progression:

Progression onto year two will be dependent on successful completion of all the year one units of the BTEC Course, passing GCSE English at Grade C or above (if re-sit required) or L2 Functional Skills and a good attendance, punctuality and behaviour record.

Although the course does not guarantee entry to any of the organisations, it seeks to develop skills and knowledge that would be sought in applicants.

The course also develops skills that would be transferable into other non-uniformed Public Services.

Cost:

16-18 year olds will not have to pay tuition fees, awarding body registration or exam fees. However they are required to pay for other third party costs, such as books, equipment and educational trips/visits.
Students aged over 19 on the 31st August in the year in which they start their studies, have to pay tuition fees. In addition they are expected to pay awarding body registration and exam fees, other third party costs, such as books, equipment and educational trips/visits.
Some students may be eligible for a fee concession, although in most cases some element of the fees will have to be paid.
