Duration: 18 months to complete, flexible times.

Start Date: This course is modular, running throughout the year, entry can be at any time.
Suitable For: Dental Nurses with at least 6 months of chairside experience. This course comprises support from the NVQ Co-ordinator in your workplace, and an opportunity to attend "knowledge workshops" at several College sites. There is an external assessment as well as your portfolio of evidence.

Course Content:
This qualification is focussed on patient care, direct chairside activities and support for a range of treatments. It requires detailed knowledge and skills regarding equipment, instruments, materials, and procedures that occur in a dental surgery.
Also the ability to work as a key member of the dental team.
Consists of 11 mandatory units.
- Promote, monitor and maintain health, safety and security in the work place
- Prepare and maintain environments, instruments for clinical dental procedures
- Supporting the production of dental radiographs
- Providing chairside support during the prevention and control of periodontal disease and the restoration of cavities
- Providing chairside support during prosthetic and endodontics
A College Assessor can be provided if there is no in-house Assessor.
The External Quality Control of the Oral Healthcare Level 3 NVQ is achieved by two methods. These are:
An externally verified portfolio of assessed evidence
&
VRQ - Vocationally Related Qualification exam.
External verification is the responsibility of City & Guilds.
Outcome of Course and Progression:
With the achievement of an NVQ award, there are opportunities for progression to other NVQs in Health and Social Care or other specialist qualifications including Dental Hygiene and Dental Technology or to train as a work based assessor.
