Central Sussex College's free training and support package for the unemployed or recently redundant has played an important part in restoring one local woman's confidence and self-esteem following her redundancy.

Karen McCarthy, from Tilgate in Crawley, joined the College's new Reach Programme in April 2009. The programme, which provides a free personalised programme of support to those who are on notice of redundancy or who have recently lost their jobs, has seen Karen working alongside Course Co-ordinator, Angela Tumulty at the College's Crawley campus.

Karen commented, "I hadn't anticipated what joining this programme would do for my self-esteem and confidence. Being back in a learning environment has helped me to focus towards my future and put a mental distance between where I am today and my last job, where I was made redundant.

"The advantage of this programme is that each session lasts no longer than three hours. Doing just a few hours each day gives you a reason to be out of the house and the opportunity to be part of the positive environment that the College provides.

"As part of the programme I have even been given the opportunity to study for a Chartered Management Institute Level 5 Award in Management and Leadership. Studying for this has given me the chance to work alongside others who are all looking to take their careers to the next level.

"I applied for this programme not really thinking it would be of any help. How wrong I was!"
