Suitable For: Anyone in permanent employment as a bricklayer and able over the period of the course to produce suitable and sufficient evidence to gain the NVQ. The employer will have to commit to allowing the student to attend College for one day per week and provide witness statements as necessary. An assessor will visit the site to assess the work based evidence for the NVQ.

Entry Requirements:
Minimum age of 16 years. Completed secondary education, self motivated with a keen interest in the industry. Foundation Construction Award in Trowel Occupations or equivalent. In suitable employment. To pass the CITB construction skills learning exercise. To achieve a satisfactory level in the diagnostic test.
Course Content:
The course, which focuses on practical activity but includes some written theory and portfolio building, consists of the following units: Store materials and equipment, erect & dismantle basic working platforms, work efficiently, brick and block walling, set out basic buildings, construct walling detail and signalling for the movement of loads. Students will have to pass a practical phase test, an externally set knowledge test and a health & safety test. Integrated into the course will be key skills in communication and application of number. Abrasive Wheels training will be included in the course. The student will need to complete a short programme on employment rights and responsibilities. The student will also gather evidence, mainly from the workplace, and be assessed against the requirements of the NVQ. (These reflect the units listed above). NVQ units: Conform to general workplace safety, conform to efficient work practices, move and handle resources, erect masonry structures and set out masonry structures.

Outcome of Course and Progression:
To achieve the nationally recognised apprenticeship framework in bricklaying. Progression to Advanced Apprenticeship
Cost:
Free tuition for 16-18 year olds. Employer contribution for 19+ Learners.
Notes:
For candidates working for a company in scope with the CITB a grant is available for this course. This course will enable the student to apply for a CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) card.
