Suitable For: This Apprenticeship is suitable for those who wish to become members of the Association of Accounting Technicians who are seriously considering an accounting career. Candidates should be working in an accounting environment.
Entry By: Interview
Entry Requirements:
Candidates should be educated to at least GCSE level with 5 passes at grade A-C, or level 2 in Basic Skills. A good command of written and spoken English and a basic knowledge of Word and Excel is required.
Candidates will sit an Interview/Entrance Test which is to include IT competence, Literacy and Numeracy.
The apprenticeship is available at two different levels and these will be discussed with you as part of the interview process.
Course Content:
The Apprenticeship consists of several separate qualifications and is available at two different levels. You will be required to work towards achieving these through a combination of coursework and tests.
The Accountancy Apprenticeship leads to an AAT Level 2 Certificate in Accounting making it suitable for accounts assistants, cashiers, credit control clerks, purchase ledger clerks or sales ledger clerks.
The Advanced Accountancy Apprenticeship leads to an AAT Level 3 Diploma in Accounting, making it suitable for trainee accounting technicians or assistant accountants.
The Apprenticeship framework covers the following elements:
Competence/knowledge course
- Basic accounting I
- Basic accounting II
- Work effectively in accounting and finance
- Basic costing
- Computerised accounting
- Professional ethics in accounting and finance (Level 2 apprenticeship students only)
Basic accounting I
Students will learn the principles and procedures related to processing business transactions, financial documents and payments for customers and suppliers. They’ll also develop skills in processing ledger transactions and preparing an initial trial balance.
Basic accounting II
Students will learn the principles and procedures related to processing business transactions, financial documents and payments for customers and suppliers.
They’ll also develop skills in processing ledger transactions and preparing an initial trial balance. Building on the skills gained in part I, students will learn to maintain and reconcile the cash book by entering receipts and payments accurately, balancing off the cash book and reconciling with a bank statement. They’ll also develop their knowledge and understanding of the UK banking system and organisational activities related to banking.
Students will develop a clear understanding of petty cash transactions. They will understand how important the Journal is as a primary accounting record. They’ll learn about non-standard bookkeeping transactions and double entry bookkeeping records, in addition to maintaining control over debtors and creditors aided by preparation and use of debtor and creditor control accounts.
Work effectively in accounting and finance
Students will develop transferable skills and the ability to work effectively within an accounting environment. They’ll develop team work skills, the ability to work independently as well as demonstrate the reasonable standard of literacy and numeracy skills needed in the workplace.
Basic costing
Students will look at the cost recording systems within an organisation and develop skills in responding to requests for information relating to costs and expenditure. They’ll also look at recording and extracting information and using a costing system to provide information for management.
Computerised accounting
Important for the workplace, students will develop their ability to select and use a computerised accounting or bookkeeping software application to input and process data for orders and invoices, receipts and payments, and to prepare management and period end reports.
Functional Skills: English and Maths
English aims to develop learners skills in Speaking, listening, communication, Reading and Writing
Maths aims to develop learners skills using mathematics, analysing situations mathematically, interpreting solutions to problems using mathematics and coverage of mathematical content in number, geometry and statistics
Employment rights and responsibilities: ERR Workbook
This is a workbook which aims to help apprentices and employers understand their employment rights and responsibilities and rights related to equal opportunities, health and safety and to understand the safe learner concept.

Outcome of Course and Progression:
Assessment - All learning areas of the AAT Accounting Qualification are assessed using AAT designed computer based assessments (CBAs).
Learning areas are assessed either with automatically marked tests and other computer based tests, which can include projects, reports and work based evidence. These are marked by your tutor, and you’ll be able to access the results within six weeks.
All students should apply for student membership of the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) prior to attending the course.
Cost:
Fully funded for 16-18 year olds. Employer contributions for 19+ employees.
