The EFL Department

Our department offers English Language courses from post beginners right through to proficiency and university foundation.

Classes range in size up to a maximum of 20. All students on an Adult Tier 4 Visa must be studying at B2 of the European Framework. However, student Visitor Visa holders and EU students can be enrolled at any level of English language courses provided by the college. If the student is under 18 years old they must be living with a legal guardian in England to be enrolled.

Once you have reached upper intermediate level, you can combine your English studies with vocational IELTS and study skills.

English Language Training

Many of our International students come to improve their English language skills before progressing on to other specialist courses in the College, in a range of areas from hair and beauty to engineering.

Others come specifically to study English language to help them progress in their work and careers.

What hours can I study?

All Tier 4 Student Visa holders must attend a minimum of 15 hours day-time study per week. Other Visa holders may be able to choose part-time study.

What will my classes be like?

We have a highly trained team of teachers - who also hold at least one teaching qualification. You can be sure, therefore, of a highly professional approach. The high standard of the College is reflected by its status as a English UK member, accredited by the British Council.

However, we also aim to ensure that you enjoy your classes. All classes are based on the communicative approach to language learning. This involves the active participation of all members of the class and places a strong emphasis on the development of fluent oral skills. For students to fully benefit from this approach, pair and group-work are an essential feature of classroom activity. Most EFL students study alongside ESOL students who come from many different countries and the average student age is around 25 years old, though we also have younger and older students.

When can I join?

You may join at any point during the academic year. When you arrive you will take an assessment test, to ensure we place you in the correct class. We aim to be extremely flexible in the combination of courses which we offer and we can help you choose the right course for your particular needs.

IELTS / University and Higher Education Preparation Courses

The International English Language Testing System classes are designed primarily for students who wish either to go on to further studies at an English speaking college or university, or practice professionally as a doctor, nurse, pilot or similar in an English speaking country. Students are prepared for both the academic or general training exams and your course tutor will advise you which you should be taking. IELTS classes can be combined with other College courses or with English Language classes.

Examinations

You will receive a College Certificate on completion of your course. However, we also encourage students to achieve internationally recognised qualifications wherever possible.

Most students study for a Cambridge exam and we hold these at the College, from preliminary to advanced level. Students going on to Higher Education will usually take the IELTS exam as well, or instead, of these.

The College's International Facility can help you to decide which is the best course for you. We are able to compare your existing qualifications with their UK equivalents. Together we can decide on the best way to achieve your career and academic goals.

Full details of our courses are available on this website or you can contact the International Admissions by phone, fax, letter or email for advice.
