Students celebrate their success!

Students celebrate their success!

Students from the Faculty of Foundation Learning have had a lot to celebrate recently, after being honoured at no fewer than three awards ceremonies in November!

The month kicked off with students from the Extended Education and Vocational Skills courses receiving certificates in a range of subjects including IT, communication, numeracy, art, and vocational tasters in subjects such as construction, retail, and beauty, at a ceremony on November 10, hosted by Curriculum Team Leader, Gillian Barton.

The ceremony, which was held at the Crawley campus, saw successful students being presented with their certificates by Principal Russell Strutt in front of a group of their family and friends.

Thursday November 17 saw the same group of students scoop the prestigious title of 'Let's FACE It!' Gardener of the Year, at the annual awards ceremony held at The Hawth, Crawley. The group were awarded the top prize in recognition of the 2,000 hours of community gardening they have completed throughout the past year, which included planting over 8,000 daffodil bulbs in Crawley Memorial Gardens, litter picking, mulching and sweeping leaves, and clearing woodland at Tilgate, Goffs and Crabbet Parks in Crawley.

After collecting their awards, the green fingered bunch had a photo-call with the South East in Bloom judges and Chris Collins, the Blue Peter Gardener. Curriculum Team Leader, Gillian Barton was thrilled to see the students' achievements recognised, saying, "it was fantastic to see the enjoyment and enthusiasm that the learners gained from working with others as part of a team carrying out the various environmental projects around Crawley. Their achievement is even more marked when you realise how many difficulties and barriers they have had to overcome in order to achieve their potential."

Ruth Growney, Let's FACE it! Coordinator for Crawley Borough Council said "It was a real privilege for me and for members of the High Quality Horticulture Team to work alongside these special young people and gain an insight into the everyday difficulties faced by them. In fact we enjoyed it so much we are about to start all over again with a new group of students. Many, many congratulations Central Sussex College."
