Students tuck in at Haywards Heath
Staff and students around the College joined forces this week to raise money for the victims of the devastating earthquake in Haiti, with a number of fundraising events taking place.
The main event this week was 'The Great Big Cake Sale... and more...' which took place on Wednesday 27 January. The Catering Services team, staff and students from the Faculty of Foundation Learning, and trainee chefs from the Faculty of Service Industries went all out to provide a selection of delicious homemade cakes and biscuits, and regular suppliers to the Food Court 3663, Natural Health and Kent Frozen Foods generously donated food and drinks to be sold for the cause.
Stalls sprung up at College campuses in Crawley, Haywards Heath, East Grinstead and Burgess Hill, and those overseeing the proceedings were overwhelmed with the generosity of staff and students. Head of Catering Andrew Bull said 'The response has been phenomenal. All the cakes were sold, and many people made an extra donation. It has been a great day!'
Catering Assistant, Sue White, who works at the Crawley campus, kindly donated the money that her colleagues had collected in honour of her mum, Mrs Jane Penfold, who died recently, to the Haiti relief effort. The money has since been added to the overall College total.
In addition, Le Cordon Vert generously donated all the proceeds from the café service on Wednesday 27. The café, which serves a selection of homemade sweet and savoury dishes, was open from 9.30am-3pm, and had raised a total of £195 at the end of the session.
Other donations from the College came from 'Project Provide', a group of A2 Business students, based at the Sixth Form Haywards Heath campus, who regularly arrange fundraising activities such as theatre trips, raffles, and even a chocolate fountain stall! The group, who have helped number of overseas projects since it was started in 2009, voted to donate £100 from the money they have raised so far this year to the Haiti appeal at a meeting on Tuesday.
To date, the College has raised just over £900 for the Disasters Emergency Committee's Haiti appeal and next week will see another fundraising activity sweep across the campuses. 'Dress Down, Hair and Hats for Haiti' will take place on Friday 5 February, and will see staff and students donning wacky hats, crazy hair-styles and casual clothes and then having to pay for the privilege!
