Staff and students around the College dusted off their deerstalkers and put on their panamas to raise money for the Disasters Emergency Committee's Haiti Appeal with a 'Dress Down, Hats and Hair for Haiti' day on Friday 5 February.

Flamboyant was the order of the day, as staff and students got involved by dressing down, wearing a whacky hat or doing something unusual with their hair. An array of outrageous, extravagant and downright hilarious head-gear was on show, and highlights included an Amy Winehouse bouffant, a fetching Easter bonnet, and even a giant Elvis-style quiff!

Collection buckets were located at all four campuses, and the event raised just under £240, which will be added to the money raised by the cake sale at the College at the end of January. The College has to date raised over £1,180 for the Disasters Emergency Committee Haiti Appeal following the devastating earthquake that rocked the poorest country in the Western world last month.

The appeal is especially relevant to a group of Geology students at the Haywards Heath campus, who were able to track the scale of the earthquake in Haiti, using the College's Seismometer, which is officially registered as a recording station with the School Seismology Project, run by the British Geological Society. Earthquakes around the world can cause spectacular traces, despite their distance, giving some idea of the power of these events and why they cause such devastation for the countries affected.
