Students promote responsible drinking at the event in Crawley
A group of students studying for their Access Diplomas in Health and Social Care at the College's Crawley campus, launched a campaign to make their fellow students more aware of the dangers of excessive alcohol, and educate them on issues surrounding alcohol abuse, as part of their assessment.
Thirteen students took part in the project, which required them to research, arrange and implement a Health promotion, with the theme of alcohol awareness chosen because of its relevance to the student body age group, and recent media coverage of young people abusing alcohol.
The group initially carried out a questionnaire on over one hundred students, which indicated that their were gaps in their knowledge relating to a number of alcohol-related areas including the number of Units of Alcohol in their favourite drinks, the time it takes for alcohol to leave the body, and the effects excessive drinking can have on personalities.
After setting up two busy stalls, one in Middle Block stairwell and the other in the Food Court, they had music playing, handed out leaflets and invited students to play a number of games guessing the number of units in their favourite tipple! They also gave away free samples on no-alcoholic cocktails to students over the lunch period, to show that there are tasty alternatives to alcohol on a night out!
