Matthew Firth receives his award on the night
College Bench Joinery student Matthew Firth, 19, was singled out for an FE Sussex Spring Runner-up Award for the Learner Developing the Best Vocational Skills, at a glittering awards ceremony held at the Brighton Metropole on Thursday 25 March. The Spring Awards, which celebrate the best and brightest achievements in training, development and lifelong learning, were set up to improve the experience of further education learners in the county, and Matthew, who lives in Southwater, had the pleasure of attending the 2010 ceremony along with students from a number of Further Education colleges across Sussex.
The eleven prize categories for the 2010 event included Sussex Apprentice of the Year, the AQA Award for the Sussex College Learner Making the Most Progress, the Hilton Brighton Metropole Hospitality Student of the Year Award, the Edexcel Award for Most Improved Learner and Training Provider Collaboration of the Year Award.
Central Sussex College student Matthew, who is currently studying for a Construction Diploma Level 3 in Bench Joinery at the Crawley campus, was nominated for the Learner Developing the Best Vocational Skills by Tony Manktelow, Curriculum Team Leader for the Faculty of Construction who said "Having taught Matt for the last three years, I have watched his vocational skills develop, particularly his confidence and ability to complete work to a good standard in a timely manner. This year he has continued to lead the class in terms of practical progress. Always enthusiastic in class, he is able to work mostly by himself, using machinery when needed and has the confidence to work through the tasks set without much guidance from myself."
College staff and students were also involved with the pre-event exhibition on the night, with Air Cabin Crew students from the Faculty of Service Industries providing the meeting and greeting service for the 150 invited guests, photography work by a group of BTEC media students on display at the venue, and Teresa Dowd, NVQ Trainer and Co-ordinator and Naomi Butcher NVQ Co-ordinator, who both work for the Faculty of Health and Community Learning at the College, staffing a health quiz exhibit complete with blood pressure testing, for nervous speakers!
