Music students from the Sixth Form Haywards Heath campus celebrated the end of term with a showcase gig at The Hub, which incorporated a wide variety of musical styles from Rock through to R&B!

The gig, which took place on 30 March, proved the best yet with students from the BTEC Music course showcasing their musical talents and performance skills to a full house at The Hub, the College's in-house performing arts venue. A total of twenty four bands performed on the night and the audience was treated to both acoustic and electric musical genres from Motown, country, and pop right through to rap and heavy metal. Many acts also performed their own musical compositions on the night, earning rave reviews for the quality of their material.

Open to members of the public, music industry executives, plus staff and fellow students from the College, the regular end of term gigs showcase developing talent in the Haywards Heath area, and expose students to the standards required for professional musical performance, and many other aspects of the music industry. Students enrolled on the BTEC Music course at the College, which is equivalent to two A Levels, learn about the employment possibilities within the music industry, music history, performance techniques, live band workshops and much more, leading to an overall polished performance.

Currently in its third year, the College's BTEC Music course has links to the Brighton Institute of Modern Music, and College bands are regularly invited to perform on the same stage as University-level musicians at venues around Brighton. Subject Leader Steve McCarthy who, in addition to teaching, is a working professional musician with music industry experience says "We have been building something very special at Central Sussex College over the past few years and I am delighted to not only see the students progress on musical performance as well as musical knowledge but also to witness them mature as individuals. Music is an industry, a band is a business and songs are intellectual property. Helping students to realise their goals and plan for the future is essential, especially in subject areas such as modern music. The BTEC music course we are delivering really gives an opportunity to the students with contemporary musical ability who also wish to study for other A Levels."
