Students onboard the South Ferry during their New York trip
A group of thirty-seven lucky students and four (even luckier) staff members from the College's Sixth Form Haywards Heath campus got to experience the sights and sounds of America's East Coast last month, as part of the annual trip organised by the English/Communication, Culture/Performing Arts and Travel and Tourism Departments. The group spent five days state-side, and whilst there, managed to take in many of the tourist attractions that the area has to offer, as well as spend time with their American pen-pals - getting a glimpse of everyday life for their U.S contemporaries.
After landing at Newark at dusk, and being treated to a spectacular view of the night time Manhatten skyline on the way to their hotel, the group was up bright and early to catch the South Ferry to Staten Island, where they met up with their pen-pals, going on to spend the day visiting the City's landmarks including Ground Zero, Broadway and of course hitting the shops! There were also educational requirements to be fulfilled - Travel and Tourism students were able to practice their guided-tour skills in their best American accents, and Literature students got to experience the setting for F. Scott Fitzgerald's iconic 'The Great Gatsby' first-hand.
The five day trip didn't include much time for rest and relaxation, as the group also managed to squeeze in a Broadway show, a trip to the Empire State Building, a day in Philadelphia, a visit to the Lincoln Centre and a sneak-preview of a forthcoming Opera, a literary tour of the Big Apple, a pilgrimage to Strawberry Fields in Central Park, dinner at the Hard Rock Café, and of course, plenty of retail therapy to boost the U.S economy!
Whilst there, the group also kept a blog, documenting how they spent their days - to read the blog, click here.
