Private training could be money down the drain

Private training could be money down the drain

Many unemployed people are being seduced by promises of a lucrative new career as a plumber, and then struggling to get work, a recent news report claims.

An article in the Guardian on Saturday 15th May exposed the pitfalls of private training providers who claim that fast-track plumbing courses enable candidates to find immediate work on completing their course. However, the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering has warned that many of these courses do not adequately prepare people to practise plumbing in a safe manner and that any City & Guilds and NVQ courses undertaken should be done so alongside practical training in the workplace.

Dean Wynter, Head of Construction at Central Sussex College, said: "People looking to retrain in any industry should choose a reputable training provider who will offer a high standard of both academic and hands-on training, and will ensure that on completion the candidate is properly equipped to go out and start work in their chosen industry. At Central Sussex College we can also advise candidates of any funding available to support the costs of retraining, something which private training companies cannot provide. We will also offer advice and guidance on the type of training needed to enable career progression."
