Hazelwick students show off their work in the engineering workshop

Hazelwick students show off their work in the engineering workshop

Forty Year 10 pupils from Hazelwick school in Crawley spent an afternoon getting familiar with College life recently, when they visited the Crawley campus for a taster day on 26 May.

After registration, the group were given a welcome talk by Student Support Information and Advice Co-ordinator, Nick Mercado, before they were split into three groups for a tour of the facilities on offer at the site. Before arriving on the day, the group had been asked to select a subject area which they were particularly interested in, and after refreshments, they headed off to either Media, Beauty, Fashion Retail or Engineering to get some hands-on experience in their chosen field.

Jean McGregor, Course Co-ordinator and Lecturer from the Faculty of Training Solutions, spent the afternoon session with the group interested in Fashion Retail. The students were shown an overview of the Level 1 Diploma course, before watching a presentation showcasing work done by current students. This included photos of London Christmas windows, displays created in work experience placements, and windows created by the students in the classroom. They were then asked to have a go at getting creative themselves, by putting together mood boards, using fashion magazines. After the visit, Jean said "The students seemed to enjoy the day, and I certainly did! I look forward to the next group of visiting pupils!"

The group of students who expressed an interest in learning more about the Engineering facilities at the College were given the opportunity to get hands-on in the workshop, when they spent the afternoon producing aluminium disks, which can be used for jewellery, tags or key rings, and which they then engraved with 'England World Cup 2010' to celebrate the start of the football world cup event and which they took away with them!

Students who chose to spent time in the Intuition salon had the opportunity to practice beauty treatments on each other, whilst the students who opted to spend the afternoon in the Media Department with Lecturer and Media Technician, Daniel Creed, were introduced to the job role of a Foley Artist, whose job it is to create sound effects for film and TV and to discuss the importance of sound in film and television. The group then used everyday objects to create a sound effect for a crashing spaceship, which they then edited using Adobe Audition.
