Eighteen students currently studying for their BTEC National Diploma in Business at the Crawley campus, took a trip to Brussels this May, to visit the European Parliament and soak-up some continental culture!

After a 4.30am start, and a trip on the Eurostar, the students, who were accompanied by Anahita Henry, Course Co-ordinator for Business, and Lecturer John Pope, arrived at the Espace Léopold, where they enjoyed a welcome session with John Fordham, who works for the Visits and Seminars Unit of the British and Irish Sectors at the complex. The three-hour session included a guided tour of the Parliamentary Chambers, a trip to the information centre, and a talk about the structure of the EU, and its relationship with the UK and other member states. The group was also given the chance to ask their own questions, which they had prepared in advance.

The two-day trip also included a visit to the EU Commission and Council, a trip to the Grand Place in Brussels city centre, and an over-night stay in a youth hostel in the nearby University town of Leuven. Course Co-ordinator Anahita Henry said "The aim of this trip is to raise awareness of the economic and political aspects of the EU and the UK's membership. These aspects are closely linked to the modules studied on the course. The trip tends to stimulate interest in the work of the European Parliament and enriches the curriculum and students' understanding of European culture."

Student Ed Mannion, 19, from Horsham, found the visit both educational and enjoyable, saying: "I would recommend this trip for all students on Business courses. There was not a moment when we were not learning about Europe and looking at different cultures - I really enjoyed it!"
