Summer Health Promotions for Students

Access students dress for the occasion on their ‘Sun Awareness’ stand
Two groups of students coming to the end of their Access Diploma in Health and Health & Social Care Professions staged two seasonal health campaigns this week, urging fellow students to be sensible in the sun, and take care at summer barbeques.
Students enrolled on the Diploma course are required to design, promote, implement and then evaluate a heath promotion, taking factors such as seasonality and target audience into account. The first event took place on 9 June, and the group, whose slogan was 'learn before you burn' dressed for the occasion in summery Tee's and shades. They handed out advice and information leaflets about how to stay safe in the sun as the temperature hots-up and also gave away prizes to students and staff members who took part in their questionnaire.
The following day, a second group from the same course unveiled their campaign - 'BBQ Awareness', combining advice on hand-washing when preparing food, plus tips on making sure meat is cooked properly, and general safety around the barbeque. They branded their stall with St George's flags - an eye-catching idea, which capitalised on the current interest in the World Cup! When students and staff visited the stall, they were able to test their hand-washing technique, by using a UV light to check for bits they had missed, and participated in a food safety quiz. All those who spent time speaking to the organisers were entered into a free raffle to win a football-shaped barbeque, which added a fun twist to the summer event.
The Access to Social Care Professions Diploma is a popular choice for those hoping to pursue a career in health and social care, and the year-long course is suitable for those wishing to return to learning and thinking about university or professional training. The Diploma can lead to a range of courses at university, including a Degree in Nursing, Midwifery, Occupational Therapy and Social Work.
