Fly fishing, skiing, gourmet cookery and sightseeing in Paris are four examples of what students at Central Sussex College's Haywards Heath campus spent three days doing this July, after the College launched E2010 - a new enrichment event which gives students the chance to take part in fun and unusual activities to celebrate the end of the year.

On July 7, 8 and 9, the normal College timetable was replaced with a whole host of exciting activities, and a number of trips and excursions, including a trip to Dublin, with a visit to the world famous Guinness factory, a trip to Paris, where sporty students visited the Stade De France, and a trip to Holland that included a visit to the Shell oil refinery in Rotterdam and the canals of Amsterdam. Some students went to the Lake District to complete their Duke of Edinburgh's Gold Award expedition whilst others a toured Shakespeare's Stratford-Upon-Avon and experienced four hours of Morte D'Arthur in the evening!

Those who preferred to stay closer to home could choose from an array of events based at the College itself, and around the local area. 'Go Ape' was a popular choice for one daring group, whilst others enjoyed cross-country cycling, walks in Ashdown Forest, and a beach volleyball master-class. College-based activities included a comedy workshop, a song-writing master-class, a chess tournament, classes in writing computer games, and a crash-course in advanced driving!

E2010 marks the first time that the College has combined all enrichment activities into one week, and on Friday, the week's events culminated with the annual Shaun Wrelton fun run. Sixty staff, students and running enthusiasts took part in the race, which has been held annually at Whitemans Green playing fields in Cuckfield in honour of former student Shaun Wrelton, who passed away due to kidney disease in 2003. The fastest time was claimed by Russ Mullen, who completed the 5km course in just seventeen minutes and thirty six seconds. All money raised goes to Kidney Research UK, which raises money for life-saving research into kidney disease, improves the quality of life of those with kidney disorders and increases public awareness of kidney health issues.

After a very successful launch, E2010 is set to become a permanent fixture in the College's calendar. Vice Principal Alex Burford said "Participation in these activities allows the students to experience education in its widest sense, taking on new challenges and meeting new people, as well as just enjoying themselves after a long and hard year!"
