Future students on the Foundation Degree in Early Years course at the College will be able to take advantage of £250 of new text books from September, after former student Sharon Moody donated a gift certificate to the Faculty of Health and Social Care at the Crawley campus on 26 July.
Sharon, who owns and runs local day nursery and pre-school, 'Kids Capers', in Loppets Road, Tilgate, completed the three year course at the College this March and was delighted with the support she received from tutors, and from Course Co-ordinator, Joy Gough. Since enrolling three years ago, Sharon has encouraged and funded four other members of staff from Kids Capers to study at Central Sussex College.
Run in conjunction with the University of Chichester, the Foundation Degree in Early Years exists to allow childcare professionals to study for further qualifications, up to and including Early Years Professional Status, in their local area. The course is taught at Central Sussex College, and the BA (Hons)/Early Years Professional Pathway is taught at the University of Chichester. The course consists of work-based learning, workshops, seminars, discussion groups, action planning, self assessment and independent study.
On completing the Foundation Degree, Sharon wanted to express her gratitude to the College with a donation that would make a difference to current and future students.
Sharon said: "When I started my Foundation Degree in 2008, I remembered Joy's desire to start a collection of text books within the Faculty that would enable students on the Foundation Degree to access appropriate literature for the course.
"I am pleased that as a former student and local Early Years provider, to be able to make what I hope to be a valuable contribution to future foundation degree courses and the professional development of many more students.
"I would like to thank Central Sussex College, and in particular, the staff from the Faculty of Health and Social Care for their continued support and dedication to this course."
On being presented with the gift certificate, Course Co-ordinator, Joy Gough, said: "As Central Sussex College moves towards opening a university centre, this is a very welcome gift, which will extend our resources for future students. We would like to thank Sharon for demonstrating how much she valued the course, through her generosity."
Sharon, and the 'Class of 2011' will attend a graduation ceremony at the University of Chichester this November. She now plans to complete her BA and Early Years Professional Pathway, in line with the government's desire for a graduate-led early years profession.
