Faculty of Technology Celebrates Student Success

John Oxley receives his award from Tony Parris
The Faculty of Technology held its certificate presentation evening for Engineering students on 14 September, and 120 students, ranging from 14-16 schools link students through to Higher Education students received awards.
Those studying Engineering subjects including; Aerospace; Motor Vehicle; Mechanical; Electrical; Electronic; Manufacturing; Fabrication and Welding all attended the event, which was held in the Longley building at the Crawley campus.
Guests were welcomed by College Principal Dr Russell Strutt, before Nick Clark of Omicron UHV Technik, East Grinstead-based scientific machinery and instrument manufacturers, presented each student with their certificate.
Student John Oxley, 17, from East Grinstead, was presented with the Rod Palmer Memorial Award, sponsored by the Burgess Hill District Lions Club. John, who is starting his second year studying Vehicle Maintenance at the College, was presented with the a shield and £100 of snap-on vouchers by Tony Parris, Secretary of the Club. This was in recognition of his outstanding performance throughout the academic year.
In addition to The Rod Palmer Award, student John O'Conner, who is 38 and lives in Brighton, was named winner of the Leo James Award. This top prize is presented by the Institute of Measurement and Control (InstMC) for Best Higher Education Performance in his HND in Engineering, which he has been studying at the College for the past three years.
The Award was set up in memory of Leo James, who was a founding member of the Surrey and Sussex section of the InstMC, and aims to stimulate the interest of young engineers in control engineering as well as in the activities of the InstMC.
Richard Brooks, Director of Technology closed proceedings with formal thanks to staff and students for their work throughout the year. He said: "It is great to be able to bring the students into one place and present them with their achievements from the previous year. My thanks to the Faculty admin team who worked hard to ensure the event was a success."
