Staff and A/AS Level German students at the Haywards Heath campus welcomed students from Germany as part of the sixth annual exchange programme in July.

The students, all from Johann Schöner Gymnasium, in the Bavarian town of Charlemange, stayed with local host families and visited the Haywards heath campus to experience college life in England. They also enjoyed trips to London, Chichester and Brighton during their stay.

Each year staff and students from the College hold a breakfast reception for the German visitors in the language laboratory, and invite a local dignitary to attend. This year, local Conservative Counsellor Jonathan Ash-Edwards, who is a former student of the campus, was invited.

Both groups of students thoroughly enjoyed the exchange, with the German guests commenting: "Schuleaustausch! Das schönste Erlebnis des Jahres!" or "School exchange! The best experience of the year" and "Die Gastfamilien waren so freundlich" or "The host families were so friendly".

Language students from the Haywards Heath campus will travel to northern Bavaria this December to visit the famous Christmas markets in cities including Würzburg and Nuremberg, a trip that prompted one student to claim: "Dies ist warum ich Deutsch lerne" or "This is why I learn German!"

Look out for news on the second part of the exchange later this year.
