The trainees on their last day at the College

Each year, Central Sussex College plays host to a group of trainee teachers from Germany, who enjoy a three-week placement as part of their final assessment. This October, staff from the Faculty of Skills for Life, based at the College's Crawley campus welcomed three trainees.

Pia Schutz and Andrea Stock, who are both from Mainz and Anita Schack from Trier, are all training to be language teachers, so the three weeks spent observing lessons at the College has been valuable from a language, as well as a behavioural point of view.

In addition to spending time with students from the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) programme, and Numeracy and Literacy classes at the Crawley campus, the visitors were also able to observe Media, Business, ICT, English and Modern Language classes at the Sixth Form Haywards Heath campus. They also observed adult learning in action, when they sat-in on community German classes at the East Grinstead campus.

Before they returned home prior to the half term break, Director of Skills for Life, Mary Hellyer thanked the trainees for their work. All three visitors spoke of how impressed they were with the way the College students worked in class, and the high quality of the ICT learning resources used by teachers. They really benefitted from their visit and thanked all the staff they had worked with during the visit for the opportunity.

Andrea Stock said: "We have very much enjoyed the visit, and have been most impressed by the facilities on offer at Central Sussex College. I found that the students were extremely well-behaved, and the classes were quiet and focused."
