A group of Level 1 and 2 Brickwork students from the College worked on a special project this summer, when they were commissioned to build a new structure to store sports equipment and house the brand new electronic scoreboard at Ifield Cricket Club.

The group of 5 students, overseen by Course Co-ordinator Garry Blunt and Ian Smith, were delighted to help out with the project, after the County Cricket Board contacted the College. The Board were keen to ensure that Ifield's ground was up-to-scratch after the club was promoted to the County League this year.

The project took two weeks to complete, and really captured the imagination of the learners, who had little previous experience of working on a building site outside of the College environment. Despite only being required to work on the project for two days per week over the summer break, several students enjoyed the project so much they chose to work every day. The students even used their new-found skills to add the initials 'I.C.C' to one of the walls.

Tutor Garry Blunt said: "This project has been absolutely ideal for the students. It's taught them so much about the industry that is difficult to teach in a classroom situation. We ran the project as if it was a professional job, so the students have had the opportunity to benefit from working to a timescale with professional materials, rather than the temporary components they use at College. We're really proud of all the students who have taken part - they've done a great job!"
