With the final phase of the campus redevelopment well underway at the College's Sixth Form Haywards Heath campus in Harlands Road, a group of student volunteers gave up their time to ensure that litter caused by the increased number of pedestrians using the nearby Turners Mill Road footpath was binned.
The six-strong 'litter-pick team' were joined by members of staff, including Vice Principal Richard Hailstone to tackle the unsightly litter on Wednesday 23 November. Donning gloves and day-glo jackets, and wielding the obligatory 'litter-pickers', the students set about tidying-up the path. As well as filling numerous black bags, it was also a great opportunity for the students to talk to local residents about what they were doing, and pass the message on to fellow students, about keeping the College and the surrounding area tidy.
Lizzie Jay, who is 17, and lives in Haywards Heath, is President of the Student Executive at the campus, and helped to organise the event. She said: "It's been a really successful afternoon! We wanted to do this to improve the College environment, as well as to help maintain a good relationship with people living close to the campus. We also wanted to make sure students don't ignore the problem of litter in future." Aidan Williams, also 17 and from Haywards Heath, added: "It's important to show that the College is helping to develop and maintain the local area."
The 'litter pick' was such a success that it may become a regular event whilst the development of the campus continues.
