Students based at the Crawley campus got their first taste of university life this month, when they enjoyed a taster day and conference at the University of Portsmouth.

The group, who are currently studying for Level 3 Diplomas in Public Services, visited the University's Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences to get an idea of what life as a university student would be like, as they will soon have to start thinking about their next step after completing their course.

On arrival in Portsmouth, the group were able to attend three short lectures on topical subjects called: 'It's the End of the World as we Know It...Financial Crisis, the Arab Spring and the Rise of China' by Dr Paul Mc Veigh; 'Understanding Criminology - A Beginner's Guide' by Dr Nathan Hall and 'Civil Disobedience and the Summer of Riots' by David Carpenter.

They then enjoyed a tour of the campus which included the student accommodation, the Students' Union, lecture halls, library and campus gym. They also got the chance to speak to current university students.

Students were accompanied by their Lecturer Steve Smith and Careers Adviser, Susie Christie, who explained: "It is important for students who are thinking about going to university to gain first-hand experience of student life, especially for those who don't have someone in their family who has already been to university. The students particularly enjoyed the Criminology lecture and several of them are considering this as a possible degree option."

College student Michelle Stacey, 19, from Crawley said: "The University of Portsmouth totally lived up to my expectations. I definitely want to go there eventually as it has lots to offer.''
