Students collected awards for their achievements throughout the year

The Faculty of Construction at hosted its 52nd annual Awards ceremony on 28th March, to celebrate student achievement throughout the year. Current and former students invited to attend the ceremony, held in the College's Longley Building at the Crawley campus, along with their guests.

Director of Construction, Dean Wynter, welcomed guests and gave an introductory speech, before special guest speaker, Ben Green, Head of Piers and Infrastructure Projects at Gatwick Airport gave an inspirational address before presenting the awards to successful students.

A total of thirty-three individual awards were presented to students from across a range of construction disciplines, including Carpentry and Joinery, Brickwork, Painting and Decorating, Plumbing, Electrical Installation and Site Management.

Amongst those to receive awards were: Daniel Turnbull, who won The Don Munro Shield, presented to the construction student who has made the greatest effort towards obtaining a craft certificate; Matthew Bristow, who won The Sir Norman Longley Memorial Prize for the student who has given the most effort to secure their achievements; and Alex Fisher, who won The Longley-Kier Cup for best evening class student in the Faculty of Construction.

Richard Verbeeten, was presented with The Cyril Branch Memorial Prize which is given to the student whose efforts and achievements have earned them 'Student of the Year'. Twenty-year-old Richard, who lives in Turners Hill, recently completed his Level 3 Diploma in Bench Joinery, and is described by Curriculum Team Leader for Wood Occupations, Tony Manktelow, as: "A remarkable student, who carries out his work with an unrivalled level of skill and accuracy, and who was also a pleasure to teach."

The evening concluded with formal thanks from College Principal Dr Russell Strutt, who also congratulated all the winning students. The awards evening was attended by Crawley's Mayor, Cllr Carol Eade, who enjoyed a drinks reception with members of staff, students, and their guests after the event.
